Causes and Symptoms
Causes
Most signs of DID occur after a traumatic event. Often in childhood, a person will create "alters" to hide the memory from themselves of the event as a way repressing the memory and also rationalizing it if the event was their fault.
A persons "alters" may also emerge from a sudden instance of stress. Many psychologists believe that DID can be dormant in almost anyone, but the right amount of stress and a persons predisposition can bring it out.
